Halcott

A Mountain Town with a Scenic Route

The Town of Halcott is located in the southwest corner of Greene County.  To visit this town you must pass through Ulster or Delaware County, as no roads cross the mountains to connect it directly with the rest of Greene County.

In 1813 the Van Valkenburg family came over Vly Mtn and settled in what is now Halcott.  In later years, the family moved west to a different farm which was the beginning of the West Settlement.  During the early 1800s,  many families started coming over the Vly, Condon Hollow and Beech Ridge Mountains to settle. In 1851 the Town of Halcott was established.  The town was named after the former Sheriff of Greene County George W. Halcott.

Long before the town was established, the first apple tree was planted in 1816 on the Dr. Fairbairn farm, which is now Crystal Valley Farms.  Crystal Valley Farms is a family-run dairy farm, that is making its presence known in farmers’ markets and grocery stores.

Outdoor Adventure

Halcott Mountain has an elevation of over 3500 feet.   For those of you who like to be in the woods, this hike is perfect.  You will need to bring your navigation skills as you bushwhack through the woods.
